My nursing dog is anemic from worms. Can I deworm her on antibiotics?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 11 months and 28 days old | 37 lbs

Was told by emergency vet that dog (had puppies 4 weeks ago) has mastitis. They also did blood work and said she's anemic. Her puppies have worms so I'm assuming she does as well. Is that what's causing the anemia? The emergency vet gave us no information or solutions to the anemia. How can we treat it? We were given antibiotics for the mastitis. Would it be safe to deworm her while she's on antibiotics?

The anemia could be because of the worms, as well as the nutritional demands of pregnancy and nursing her pups. You can deworm her while she is on the antibiotic, however make sure the deworming treatment is safe for nursing animals. To help with the anemia try the following Limit energy expenditure everyday (think frequent walksfor short amount of time) Iron rich foods- cooked spinach and extra lean ground beef Here is an amazing resource to explain anemia and what you can do now; https://www.petcoach.co/article/6-things-you-should-know-about-anemia-in-dogs/
