How to help my dog with painful constipation before neutering?

Hi there my dog seems to be staring to poop and when he does manage it he yelps. I've had him at the vets twice this past week he said he's ok but his prostate is quite large and said to get him neutered but thats not for 3. Weeks! Meanwhile he's still in pain and rarely going to poop at all

While you wait for the surgery I would suggest the following tactics to help make it easier for Teddy to pass feces; Add in a wet food which is higher in water content and will hopefully make his motions easier to move through Increase exercise and this is proven also to help with gastrointestinal health Canned pumpkin Oil supplements- see dosing in article below Here is an excellent resource that I recommend for constipation; https://www.petcoach.co/article/best-home-made-remedies-for-your-constipated-pet/

    I am sorry to hear of Bear's constipation issues. Some natural things you can try at home would be adding canned food and even adding water to the canned food so that he ingests more water. Encourage Bear to drink water by making sure he always has access to fresh water. You can even add ice cubes for him to eat or you can add them to his water. 1-2 tbsp of pure canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling) can be added per meal to help him be regular. Depending on his age, there can be other medical issues that can cause constipation such as kidney or intestinal disease, enlarged prostate or even colon or anal gland tumors. So if the above things do not help I recommend you take Bear in to a vet to get an exam and determine if any additional testing such as bloodwork or xrays may be needed. I suggest you start with neutering and see if that corrects the problem. Feed him a soft, bland diet for ease of digestion and to make the stools softer so it is easier for him to defecate. My dog is having some hard time to poop. What are the foods that can help him? I heard that adding salt in his drinking water would help him.. please advise me
I would definitely not add salt as this can cause him to have salt poisoning and subsequent neurological problems. I would suggest adding 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) to his food daily which will add fiber and hopefully allow him to go #2 a bit easier. If he is still having issues then I would have his prostate examined to check if it is enlarged and possible the underlying problem as to why he can't go easily. An enlarged prostate will push up on the colon, making the hole narrower so that poop can't easily pass through. The cure for this is to have him on a laxative through your vet and ultimately getting him neutered can resolve this issue for good. I hope everything works out for your pet Kitty. Take care.

Given that Stanley was recently neutered and had abdominal surgery to find the undescended testicle, he may be a little painful still and that's causing him to cry out in pain when pooping. It could be as well that if he is on pain medication, it is making him a little constipated, and you can try adding a tablespoon of canned pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling) in with his food to see if that helps. If this doesn't help, and he's still crying when pooping after 24-48 hours, then I would take him into the vet for an exam.

Panda had surgery to remove his dew toe on 2 days ago he is eating and drinking well has been out to urinate twice but not pooped he is on cage rest so wonder if I should take to vet today or wait a another 2 days as he has to get bandage changed in

Hello and welcome to Boop by Petco. I would recommend x-rays if you haven't already done them to ensure there isn't a blockage and ensure the poop that is stuck (if there is poop stuck, some other conditions can look like constipation but aren't constipation) is not bony poop that requires a more invasive enema. Otherwise, lactulose as well as canned pumpkin can be given to help make the feces softer, however if there is a big blockage in the colon or hard bony poop the laxative won't help this. Sometimes IV fluids are needed to rehydrate Peanut and therefore rehydrate the poop so it can pass. Chat with your vet about x-rays or a more involved enema. Best of luck with Peanut!

Hi doc..simba was neutered on 11th monday but he has not pooped since after that ..
You need to feed him something high in fiber for the next couple days and also make sure he is taking in enough water. He probably has some dehydration that is causing him not to poop. High fiber foods can be bread, cooked squash or pumpkin, high fiber cereals (if he will eat it). You can also give him some chicken or beef broth to drink - the high salt will make him drink more water. Hope this helps.

You can try adding a tablespoon of pumpkin puree to her food. This will add fiber to her diet, and may help her pass feces. Please do not give her a human laxative or enema, as this is not safe to do. Human laxatives should only be given under strict veterinary supervision, and human enemas contain ingredients that can cause fatal electrolyte imbalances in dogs. If need, the vet can prescribe laxative and give an enema. Having her seen by a vet tomorrow is a good idea. Good luck, I hope this helps!

Hey, my dog has been having some constipation we are bringing him to the vet tomorrow is there anything that we can do to comfort him until then?
I would try giving him 1/2 tablespoon of canned 100% pumpkin for some added fiber. Also make sure he is drinking plenty of water. I would not give him any human pain meds as these are toxic to dogs. I hope this helps and the vet will be able to prescribe additional meds for constipation if needed.

Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about Cosmo. Poor boy. Try adding a teaspoon of canned pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling) with his food to see if that helps. You really should have him checked out by a vet for this as I see he's not neutered and prostate problems can cause constipation in dogs. I hope this helps!

My new puppy is constipated. Our veterinarian is not in today. His rectum is concerning--like he has a hemorrhoid. He cries when he tries to poop but has pooped a little today. What can I do to help him?
It looks like he might have a little rectal prolapse. If your vet isn’t available, you can try to treat this at home as follows: This will sound weird, but bear with me. ;) Get some table sugar, dissolve it in a little water (say maybe 3 tablespoons of sugar and just enough water to dissolve it. Soak the corner of a washcloth, paper towel, or a piece of gauze with the sugar water and then apply it directly to his bottom. Let it be in contact for 10-15 minutes. (Be PATIENT here.). The osmotic pull of the sugar will reduce the swelling in the prolapsed tissue and it may got back in on its own. If it does not, using a gloved hand, use some KY jelly and VERY GENTLY try to push it back in. Be aware that it may pop back out. If it’s a recurrent problem, he may need to see a vet to have a temporary “purse string” suture placed. Make sure he’s been dewormed. Add a little fiber to his diet, about 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of canned pumpkin daily may help “regulate” him, and a dog probiotic
