My dog has low fructosamine after steroids. Are her adrenals okay?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Brussels Griffon | Female | spayed | 23 lbs

My 9 yr. old spayed female dog was diagnosed with IMHA in February. She was critically ill with a hemoglobin of only 6. She was treated with 25 mg. of Prednisone daily for many weeks and has been gradually weaned down to now only getting 5 mg. every 3rd day. Her lab values are near-normal except for a low fructosamine level (less than 100) for the last 4--5 weeks. Do I worry that her adrenal glands have totally stopped working?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I'm glad Annie is doing well after such a scary illness! I use fructosamines to monitor or diagnose diabetes. I haven't ever used it for adrenal function. Maybe your Vet was using the fructosamine to make sure Annie wasn't becoming a diabetic from high doses of steroids. A low or normal fructosamine in that case is great! I hope this helps!
