Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Male | neutered | 6 years and 11 months old | 13 lbs
my dog is six and had surgery in to remove a piece of wood that he swolled. They took it from his large intestine. It has been a month and he still has diarrehea but only at night and his stomach makes strange noises. What could be the causes for this? Bacteria or has intestine telescoped? Thank you fpr your time

I would highly advise taking Sparkie back into your veterinarian for a recheck. It sounds like he is not healing as expected from the surgery. It may be that he would benefit now from a change in food or an addition of probiotic supplements. In the meantime try a bland easily digested food such as hills I/d or boneless boiled chicken breast and steamed rice. Here are some tips to help with diarrhoea at home; https://www.petcoach.co/article/6-things-you-can-do-at-home-if-your-pet-has-diarrhea/ If Sparkie refuses to eat, cannot pass feces, has vomiting, blood in his diarrhoea or seeks in pain I would take him straight to the vet.

Hi there and thank you for your post! If he is now having chronic diarrhea post surgery, I would be suspicious that he has developed inflammatory bowel disease. I have seen this develop in several post-op cases due to the trauma to the intestines from the foreign body. Most of these cases can be managed with a different diet such as Royal Canin Ultamino and probiotics. If Sparkie is now dealing with chronic diarrhea, I would certainly try and switch the food and give it a minimum of 4 weeks to see a difference. If he is showing other symptoms such as vomiting and lethargy I would get him in sooner. If no improvement with the new diet change, I would get an abdominal ultrasound performed. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions / concerns. I am also available via consultation.
