Senior dog's stiff legs. Can I give joint supplements without vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Puggle | Female | spayed | 30 lbs

Hello , I have a puggle ( pug beagle mix) who is about 14 years old. Every now and then , her back legs get stiff and she limps or theh give out when going up the stairs. I haven't taken to the vet yet because it's good for awhile , then she has one bad day then back to good . But I was looking into a hip joint supplement and was wondering if that is something I can give her without consulting my vet ? Thanks

Hi, thanks for using Petcoach! Poor Harley, it is hard getting old! He could have arthritis or a spinal degenerative issue. I see a lot of older pugs with hind leg issues at Harley's age. Usually I start them on a steroid and gabapentin. Sadly it tends to be progressive if the neurologic spinal issue. If it is intermittent then starting Harley on a joint supplement and Omega 3 fatty acids may help if it is arthritis. Below are brands of each that I like for my patients. I hope this helps and good luck! https://www.chewy.com/nutramax-dasuquin-msm-joint-health/dp/35838 http://vrshealth.com/canine-products/canine-omega-benefits/
