Why is my chihuahua losing hair on her head with scaly skin and sores?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | unspayed | 4 lbs

My chihuahua is losing tufts of hair on her head. It looks like scaly and white, and then a pink sore will appear. Do you know what this could be? She recently had 9 teeth extracted under anesthesia and was on antibiotics for 7 days. Thanks

Hello, sorry to hear about Foxy. There's a couple of things this could be. Because she went through a stressful event, her immune system may have been a little low and she may have picked up something from the dog park, or day care, or may be having an over growth from a normal skin parasite known as demodex. Some of the things that she could have picked up include ringworm, other mites, or even lice. This could also be an allergic reaction to a certain shampoo, clothing detergent or even plants and trees. Finally, it could also be a reaction to whatever medications or anesthesia she may have been on. The first step would be to rule out any mite, bacteria or fungal infection Foxy may have acquired. If negative, considering the other things like allergies and medicine reactions would be fair. Hope this helps and best of luck!
