Does my dog really need a special diet for life after struvite stones?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 28 lbs

My dog Penny a Corgi mix, just had bladder stones removed. They are the struvite type. The vet says she must be on a "special diet for life." Is that true? All over the internet it says that is not the case.

Hello, sorry to hear about Penny, I wish her a speedy recovery. The recommendation to put her on a different diet, likely a Urinary SO diet is so that this changes the pH of her urine to prevent reoccurrence of struvite stone formation. She doesn't "have" to be on a different diet per say, but if you continue her normal diet, there's a chance she may reform struvite stones. Hope this helps!
