What to do if my older cat has loose stools but no other symptoms?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 6 lbs

My cat has loose stools for about three days. She has a bowel movement once daily, which is typical. She is not exhibiting any other symptoms. She has an appetite and does not appear lethargic. She had a check up recently, including a stool sample analysis, and got a clean bill of health. She is an older cat. Any suggestions?

Considering what you described, I would suggest to withhold food for the next 8-12 hours and then start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken/white fish and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice diarrhoea, more vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. As a first approach in this case, I would suggest to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. if that is the case a clinical examination at your local veterinarian is immediately essential as antibiotics and possibly further investigations (like abdominal imaging as ultrasound or radiographs) may be needed. Hi there! Sometimes cats can develop transient loose stools due to causes such as mild gastrointestinal upset which may not be linked to anything specific or serious. If Toby is otherwise fine, it is ok to monitor for now. If the stools do not improve or progress to watery diarrhea, have him evaluated by your veterinarian. If this is just a mild episode, hey may return to normal quickly. Good luck!

This diarrhoea is likely to be caused by dietary indiscretion. Milk should be avoided. Continue to give boiled chicken and rice in small portions for the next 72hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice vomiting, lethargy or inappetence.
