Do dogs get sad or depressed when separated from a companion?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Male | unneutered | 3 years and 1 month old

My dog (male) has been living with my mother in law and her dog friend (female), for about two years now. The dogs had a difficult time adapting to each other (the female was older and anxious and the male was young and too playful for her). My mother in law can't deal with the situation anymore. My parents are willing to take my dog to live with them (to another city). My concern is: after two years living together (they were friends after all) will the dogs suffer with the separation?

Hi there and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! There is a possibility you may see a little depression in the dogs initially, but in my experience dogs tend to adapt and will probably bounce back quickly. If your parents are noticing depression in Rocky once he moves perhaps they could find a doggy day care where he could interact and play with other dogs occasionally. Best of lucky to Rocky on the move!
