Hello! Cheeko can certainly learn many tricks and maybe words. Cockatiels are not great “talkers” and tend to do much more singing. However, birds are extremely smart and if you put the time into training, you should be rewarded no matter what age the bird is. I highly recommend using positive reinforcement clicker training. Find his favorite food item (like spray millet) and ONLY ever give him this food during training sessions. This helps get his attention for the task and motivates him to learn. I've never really heard of a bird talking or speaking in their sleep as a sign of happiness. It may be that your bird isn't actually asleep when he is chattering, or he is just trying to be more social with you.

You can use recordings and play them daily. Simply speaking and interacting with Tico will also work. Repeat words or phrases for 10-15 minutes several times daily. Reward and praise him when he repeats. This is no guarantee he will talk, but it's a good start. Be patient and consistent.
