Can I give my dog human Kaopectate? Are there dangerous additives?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My vet gave me precription Kaopectate that ran out. I got some from the drug store. Is it safe to give her? Does Human Kaopectate have any additives in it that are dangerous for dogs? I live in the U.S.A. It's made of Bismuth subsalicylate 262 mg. I still have the sryringe the vet gave me for the dog version. Thanks, have a great day.

Over the counter is safe for dogs it may not be the same that your vet prescribed. Sometimes your vet has versions with probiotics or antibiotics added to it. It is best to call your vet in the morning to see if theirs is similar or if you need a refill of their type or a recheck if there is no improvement
