Is a vegan diet safe and healthy for my new 3-month-old kitten?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered

We just adopted a 3-month-old shelter kitten and want to switch him to a vegan diet. How do we do this safely? Are there any supplement products we should start putting on our grocery list for him?

I would not recommend placing a kitten on a vegan diet. This is not the proper formulation for a cat. It is important for cats to eat meat to have proper nutrition and grow properly. IF it is for religious regions I would consult your vet about a prescription diet. Purina HA for dogs is a vegetarian based meal. It is possible that HA for cats is the same. However you will need a prescription to buy this food.

Here is a link to a meta-study on vegetarian versus meat-based diets for dogs and cats. The findings are mixed and it is recommended that owner's monitor their pets to ensure that they are receiving a balanced diet. Regular veterinary visits are needed to ensure that pets' electrolytes, as well as blood and urine pH are at appropriate levels. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5035952/
