My old dog is bloated, not eating, and very weak. Is she dying?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | 13 years and 6 months old | 25 lbs

My 11 year old beagle/basset mixed has not eaten in the last 2 days, her appetite has been poor for weeks now. Today her abdomen is bloated and she can only walk a short distance then just lies down. She is an indoor dog but goes out during the day in our fenced yard to use the bathroom and play with our other dogs. But I have noticed that she has not had a bowel movement for over 24 hours. She does not appear to be in pain. Is her body shutting down?

With Molly not eating well for a while and now and with a bloated abdomen this does not sound like just constipation. Not wanting to move and abdominal bloating in a senior dog may be due to heart disease or she may have a mass in her abdomen. I recommend taking her in for an exam and X-rays to see if it's fluid, constipation or a mass causing the bloating. Your veterinarian may recommend a blood panel also to check her organ function and whether she is anemic. Heart conditions often can be treated with a good response. It's important to know what is causing her bloating in order to treat her successfully. If your veterinarian feels like her body is shutting down and she has a poor prognosis they can help you decide what is best for Molly.
