Why is my dog vomiting, not eating, shaking, and having diarrhea?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | spayed | 2 years and 7 months old

My female two year old chihuahua is not doing well. For the past two days she has been throwing up, not eating, not laying on my bed (which has never happened before) and she has been passing brown loose stools. When I get home she doesn't yelp and run around like she usually does, and when I have food she doesn't act interested at all. She goes crazy and won't leave me alone when I have something. She seems hesitant to sit or lay down and she won't stop shaking. Help.

Hello there and thank you for using Pet Coach. With your description of Bambi's problem, I would be worried about a systemic disease / infection or that maybe she ate something and it is causing a GI obstruction. I would get her seen as soon as possible so that she can receive the appropriate medical treatment as soon as possible. The sooner the better. Please let me know if you have any other questions / concerns. I am also available via consultation.

Hi. Unfortunately this is very concerning. If she isn't moving, shaking and vomiting, she needs to be seen ASAP! She is young so parvo, low glucose, parasites, or even foreign bodies are high on list. Please take her to ER right away

I'm sorry Abby isn't doing well! There could be a couple of reasons why she threw up including a Gi illness, eating something rotten, pancreatitis, a foreign body, or a pyometra. I can give you a home remedy to try to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. I hope this helps!

Poor Luna sounds quite sick. She could have a severe GI illness, a foreign body, pancreatitis, may have eaten something rotten, or could have a pyometra (infection of the uterus) causing her symptoms. You have tried home remedies without success, so yes it's time to see a vet. I would take her into one now. Best of luck.
