Puppy had bloody stool and worms. Is he really fine after treatment?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 2 months and 21 days old | 5 lbs

Got a puppy last wk (an 11 wk old) Chihuahua/Shitzu mix. On ride home he vomited and had diarrhea & we noticed a worm coming out of his rectum so, we took it back to the shop. They kept him for 2 days, said he had medication for it & "He's fine now" First night at home started having a little blood-tinged stool 2nd day it turned into bloody stool and then it was a jellylike blood. We took him back to the shop again on Sunday. Their vet says his fine now, no blood, solid stools. I'm skeptical.

I can definitely understand your skepticism considering your experiences. I have a couple of thoughts that may help put your mind at ease: 1). The worms and bloody diarrhea are actually quite common problems in puppies, so I'm not too concerned that there is some inherently wrong with Puppy. I would also not expect that he's going to have similar problems again in the near-future. 2). Make sure that Puppy was actually treated by a veterinarian. You can verify by getting the veterinary treatment records from the shop. If they are not signed by a veterinarian (someone with DVM behind their name), then that would be suspicious. 3). If there are more problems, then seek treatment from a private veterinarian. Regardless, it's best to take him in for a first-checkup to your own vet. They can alert you if they see anything wrong with Puppy and can advise you on the best care for him. I hope that helps and all goes well for puppy.
