My dog has deep cuts on back paws, stopped bleeding, needs stitches?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 35 lbs

Do either of these need stitches? They tried to dig up a wire L-footer and cut their back paws running over the sharp broken wires. The bleeding has stopped, but both cuts are a bit deep. They won't walk on them unless they are on thick carpet. I disinfect daily with hydrogen peroxide and am keeping them inside where they stay off their feet mostly.

Hi there! I am afraid that they do need stitches. They are deep and large enough that the tissues would benefit from stitches to help them heal. Try to avoid using peroxide directly on the wound as this can hurt and it is not necessarily indicated. Have your veterinarian take a look at Riley so that ultimately that decision on using stitches or not can be made based on a more close examination. Good luck and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
