Why does my cat still have diarrhea, blood, and big belly after worm meds?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I adopted a cat from petco , has worms . Took her to the vet day after I got her. They treated her for worms (they treated her once before she went to petco). Her belly is still big and pooped worms 5 days after 2nd treatment, I gave her more meds that day. Shes had runny poop and a little blood in her poop since Ive had her. Shes happy and playful otherwise but I need the runny poop to go away. I have to clean her butt after she uses the litter box., not good!!!

I'm sorry your new cat is having issues with worms! They can be frustrating to treat, and cats can have more than one type of intestinal parasite at a time. I would have a fecal sample re-checked to ensure there isn't another type of parasite that may need a different dewormer contributing to her issue. If that isn't the case, she may need a probiotic, bland diet or antibiotic to reset her bacterial flora and get her stool normalized. I would reach out to her regular veterinarian to see what your options are. Good luck!
