My puppy has kennel cough. Is a lingering cough still contagious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 7 months and 29 days old | 60 lbs

My puppy has kennel cough. Shes almost at the end of full recovery. Except for a slight cough. For example when she pulls on her lease she coughs or just waking up. I am wondering if she still contagions? My vet gave her medication already. We went in for a check up and he said she was fine just its in her throat. I was a little confused on to weather she could be contagious still.

Dogs are typically "contagious" for the first week or so of illness. To be safe, isolate Luna from other dogs for about two weeks. The cough may linger for longer but is not an indication of active infection.

Hi there! Thanks for entrusting us with Luna's health. Dogs can be contagious for up to 14 days usually though I would keep her isolated from other dogs for a total of 21 days just in case. Good luck!
