How long for kitten herpes eye infection antivirals & antibiotics?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My 12 week old kitten needs treatment for a Herpevirus eye infection. I have a veterinarian that can prescribe but he's not a specialist and we're having trouble getting clarification on treatment length (without a super expensive outside consultation). What is the length of a typical course of antivirals (cidofovir and famvir?) How about the length of time for chlorpotic antibiotic? I seem to see online that 6 weeks / 3 weeks respectively is typical, but there's a lot of variation.

Hi and thanks for your question on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Cidofovir ophthalmic has a typical length of about 10 days and Famciclovir has a recommended duration of 2-4 weeks. Kittens less than 5 days old may only need only a 2 week treatment. The chloramphenicol length of time is determined by your prescribing veterinarian. As always, you should receive all dosing and prescribing information directly from your veterinarian who is Rx the medication. I hope this has helped!
