My dog has GI upset. Can Doxycycline and Metronidazole be combined?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 11 months and 12 days old | 50 lbs

My 11 month old dog (pointer/lab mix) 50 pounds was prescribed Doxycycline for kennel cough, she's been on it for 9 days, has 5 days left. She was vomiting and had diahreea so the prescribed metronidazole antibiotic for her intestinal issues. Is it okay to take both of these antibiotics together? Should I stop taking the Doxycycline?

I'm sorry to hear Lexi got kennel cough. Some dogs can get GI upset on antibiotics. Metronidazole and doxycycline can be given together without an issue typically. I would hold on the doxycycline for 24 hours, continue the metronidazole and a bland diet and then restart the remainder of the doxycycline. If the GI issues persist then I'd reach out to your regular veterinarian. Good luck!
