Why is my cat's fur peeling after liquid antibiotic medicine?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 2 years and 3 months old | 6.5 lbs

My cat Misha is on the antibiotic Clandamycin following an infection she got from teeth being removed. She has had dried on liquid medicine on her chin and cheek, and it caused an inch-long strip of fur to just... peel off. The skin is fine and doesn't look irritated, but I had to trim the fur off that was just peeled back towards her cheek and clumped. What the heck is in the medicine that would make it do that???

Hi and thanks for you question. Clindamycin (to my knowledge) should not cause hair to peel off, however, if it sat on her fur for any length of time, it may have caused local irritation. Unless you contact the veterinarian who Rx the liquid form or contacted the product manufacturer, I am unable to tell you exactly what is in the medication that could have been an irritant to her hair. You may want to contact the veterinarian who Rx the product to Misha. I'm glad to hear her skin appears unaffected, however.
