My dog got burned by ash. Is the scab infected or just healing?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 5 years and 5 months old | 6 lbs

Hi, about two weeks ago, a bit of burning ash from a cigarette fell on my dog accidentally and only noticed after a i smelt burned hair then took it straight off, but she didnt seem to feel any pain. I checked the spot again and it didnt seem to have burned her skin. However a couple days later i noticed it had given her a small rough patch, and today when i noticed it had grown into a bigger scab. I don't know weather or not is infected or its just it form of healing.

Hi and thank you for the question. I do think this area looks infected. She probably suffered from a superficial minor burn. These, too can get infected. Until you can get to the vet, clean the area with a mild soap, dry thoroughly and apply a topical antibiotic. A cream type is best, but ointment would be phat as a second choice. She may need a prescription antibiotic and your vet can tell you that during the exam.
