First-time dog mating: Will my large male injure a virgin female?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cavalier King Charles Spaniel | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 3 months old | 19 lbs

My female is in heat. I was told by a fellow breeder that she is very tight she is a virgin. He also remarried that our male also first timer has very large bulbous glands and could hurt the female when and if the tie. Is this really a factor if so would you consider ai as areasonible alternative

It is not common for dogs to get injured during mating. I honestly would not be very concerned. Typically first time for matting with a female and a male might take them a little bit to figure it out but I would just let nature takes it course. If you find they tie and she does not become pregnant I would recommend having a semen analysis done before jumping to artifical insemination.
