Is twilight anesthesia humane for dog neutering? Are they awake?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 6 years and 4 months old | 20 lbs

I was just informed that my dog was given twilight instead of general anesthesia during his neutering. Is this less human for my dog?! This was a few years ago and I only ask because I recommended the place my dog was neutered and I was told twilight does not completely knock them out?!

I would not say that this is less humane. I am not sure exactly what your vet says is "twilight" as this is usually a combination of different injectable anesthetics and different vets use different things. More often than not, these injectable anesthetics completely sedate or even anesthetize them so they have no sense of pain or consciousness during the procedure. I hope this helps.
