My dog barks early morning for attention. How do I stop him?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 5 months and 23 days old

How do I stop my dog from barking early in the morning? I can't leave him barking because it isn't fair on my neighbour or I would just ignore him. He definitely doesn't bark because he needs the toilet as I let him out and he just comes back in. He just wants company, when someone comes down to him he lays down and goes to sleep. I don't know how to stop him from doing this

Hello and thank you for your post! You can use a citronella collar to help deter his behavior. This is a harmless spray collar that spritzes citronella in his face whenever he barks. It works well in some and not in others. I would at least give this a try and see if this is a good solution for Ziggy. Please let me know if you have any other questions / concerns.

Sorry you are dealing with this! Let me tell you that this is a much more common issue than you think. There are a few things you can try. First, neutering him may help calm him down and could correct certain behaviors such as this one. Having said that, this alone will not always achieve the desired results. It always goes back to teaching our dogs by rewarding them often. They love treats and encouraging words. You can always let him know that what he is doing is wrong. Distract him and when he remains quiet as desired, you reward him with a treat. Also, usually barking has a trigger which could be loud outside noises or even hearing your neighbor. I advise that you start rewarding him right before the triggers so that he can associate being quiet with something positive. Sooner or later, he'll get the hang of it. Good luck with Ziggy!
