How long until puppy flea treatment works & what else can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 4 months and 30 days old | 60 lbs

My 5 month old puppy has fleas and a few apparent flea bite marks on his stomach. There also marks of him biting himself on his leg. I bought him a flea collar, flea shampoo, and PetLock plus to get rid of them. How long until results show and what else can I do?

I am so sorry that Benito is suffering from a flea problem. It seems like you have been very proactive in attacking the issue. Within a week you will notice less fleas on him and his skin will start to calm down. If however, he has irritate skin I would advise placing a cone on him so he can't bite or lick areas and introduce infection. To completely rid yourself of the flea problem your house should also be treated for fleas. An interesting fact is that fleas spend most of their life cycles off of your dog. So treating the house for fleas will stop the life cycle and prevent re-infestation of Benito. There are several sprays on the market. Most can be used once a week over a month period if you treat Benito and your house for a solid three months most cases of fleas will disappear completely.
