My dog's skin is purple after shaving matted fur. Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Alaskan Malamute | Male | neutered | 6 years and 3 months old | 95 lbs

I have an Alaskan malamute who had really bad mats on his fur on his butt area so we shaved that part of the fur off. He has spots of dark purple on his skin where we shaved and I don't know why and if it's something to worry about

Hi there! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach and entrusting us with your pup's health. This could be razor burns or perhaps just minor trauma from the shaving. This could have happened just from shaving which I understand can be quite challenging in this breed. I advise to keep a close eye on it. If no improvement is noted, have your veterinarian take a look at it to ensure that there is nothing to worry about based on its appearance as it is hard to know without looking at it more extensively. Best of luck with your pup!
