Dog eye discharge: Can ointment affect tear test or is it allergies?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Female | spayed | 9 years and 8 months old | 3.6 lbs

Bella has left eye ulcer. Going back to vet tonight for recheck. Wears cone but still trying to rub face/both eyes. Both eyes have white stringy discharge. Concerned that even if ulcer heals, we are still dealing with issues. Vet has her on BNP ointment in both eyes due to discharge. Want to request tear test tonight but could it be false results due to being on BNP ointment for almost a week? Could it be allergies causing eye discharge? i just want her back to normal.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The BNP could cause a falsely higher than normal tear reading. It would be best to measure her tears after the ulcer has healed and she is off the ointment. Also the eye makes more tears when it is painful. Allergies can cause itchy eyes and discharge. I am sure your Vet will get to the bottom line and will get Bella back to normal! Good luck!
