What to use for padding in a feral cat shelter and make it durable?

In a cardboard feral cat shelter (I temporarily have no other solution) would it be better to use clothes as padding/bedding or nothing at all since I have no access to straw, insulation or hay? What else could I use to make my cardboard shelter as durable as possible? I already have a plastic lid taped on top, plan to put bricks underneath, and then place the whole thing under my deck. I might put some baking soda around to repel bugs but I don't want to affect the cats. Thanks!

Hi there and thank you for your post! I would say place some sort of padding inside such as old clothes for bedding. The cats may defecate and urinate on it so you may need to check it regularly and change out the box as well if it begins to smell. There are multiple insecticides that pest control companies use that are non toxic to animals. I would give them a call and see what they can do to help you out. Remember, feral cats can be diseased and carry ticks and fleas. If you have any other animals at home, I would get them on a flea and tick preventative. You can use gorilla tape to go around the entire outside of the box as well for an increase in durability. I hope this helps! Please feel free to contact me with any further questions or concerns you may have.
