Why does my puppy have a vaccine lump and diarrhea after shots?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | unneutered | 2 months old

My puppy is 9 weeks old on tuesday. He had his first vaccination last tuesdays 6 days ago and has a lump on his back. Is this normal that it has lasted this long? He also has bad diarrhoea but this may be the treats he has been having? Thanks Dani

Hi there! A small lump at the area of a vaccine is fairly common. It may take a couple weeks to go away and is usually nothing to worry about. Do keep an eye on it for any redness, heat, soreness, or discharge - these are reasons to re-visit the vet. The diarrhea is probably unrelated to the vaccine, and can be caused by dietary indiscretions (e.g. too many new treats). If he is acting normal and not experiencing any vomiting, you could try giving his stomach a rest for 6-8 hours by not feeding him, then reintroducing small meals of boiled chicken and rice. If the diarrhea continues after this or any other symptoms develop, it's time to see the vet. I do worry about dehydration in young dogs that have severe diarrhea, so please bring him in if he starts acting lethargic. Good luck, and I hope Jack gets well soon! :)
