Why won't my dog eat his food after coming home from the kennel?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd - miniature | Male | neutered | 1 year and 3 months old | 17.63 lbs

My dog had been staying at a kennel for 2 weeks. The day of his return, he was happy & ate well but after that day, he hasn't been eating his food as much. He has two meals every day - his breakfast usually consists of rice w/ veggies & his dinner consists of dog kibble (by Purina Arabia). On 12th, he didn't eat his breakfast, this is really shocking since he loves rice, & he hasn't been eating his dinner either. He only eats when he is being hand fed and sometimes spits it out. What do I do?

Hello, sorry to hear about Leo. He could have been getting a different kind of food at the kennel that he now prefers. The other concern is that he may have gotten sick while he was at the kennel and he now has a poor appetite. Look for any coughing, vomiting, or diarrhea and have him evaluated by your veterinarian if he develops any of this. In the mean time, you can add a little skinless and boneless, boiled chicken or cottage cheese to his rice to see if he eats for you. Best of luck and hope this helps
