Why is my senior bulldog drowsy and struggling to walk up stairs?

Hi there wondering what could be wrong with my dog she's an old time bulldog 8 years old, she seems drowsy an she's struggling to walk up and down the stairs, very slow when she's walking

It could be that Missy is in pain. As an older dog, arthritis is common and it would cause her to be lethargic, struggle to walk up and down stairs, and to be slow when walking. I would have her seen by a vet today if possible for a physical exam, lameness exam, and possibly x-rays. If she does have arthritis, the vet can prescribe pain medications to help her with the pain. Please do not give her any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. I hope this helps!

    Bulldogs tend to have arthritis issues in their old age, because of the way their body is structured. This may explain why she would want to lay around more and why she is walking slowly. There could also be some type of organ disease, infection or even cancer that can make her feel bad; so it's best to have a veterinarian evaluate her. If it is arthritis, then she can be put on medication that would make her feel much better. If it's something more serious, then it's best to diagnose it as early as possible in order to have the best success at treatment. I hope that helps and Missy feels better soon.

My three year old bulldog usually has a lot of energy but over the last week she has been lethargic and can’t seem to jump on and off couch and bed by herself anymore. She’s eating normally.
Thank you for submitting your question regarding Zellie. I recommend that she sees her veterinarian to investigate this sudden change in behavior. She sounds very sore. She could be experiencing pain in her back or hindlimbs that is limiting her mobility. Her veterinarian will carefully examine her and try to detect any sore areas. If found, x-rays may be recommended. In the meantime, do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs. I hope this information helps!

Hi I have dog named Rose for the paday she has not been wanting to do that much and she is walking in a crouched position and has trouble getting up the steps to the porch.
It sounds like Rose is in pain, and I see she is a senior dog. It could be arthritis causing her pain, or she may have injured herself. I also see she isn't spayed, and a pyometra (an infection of the uterus) could cause these symptoms as well. I would take her into a vet immediately to get checked out. I hope this helps!

The most likely cause for your dog's pain would be arthritis based on her age and the description of the problem you provided. Arthritis is an extremely common condition in dogs. As a 16 year old dog it is almost a given that Nokie has some serious arthritis and that while she probably has been having pain for a few years now but did not show it, the pain now is so bad that she is afraid to jump up on the bed or climb stairs. In severe arthritis cases like that the quality of life can be significantly improved by giving NSAIDs which take inflammation away and therefore pain. Make an appointment with your vet for an exam and a blood test to verify that her kidneys and liver are working properly and then your vet can prescribe NSAIDs or pain medicine for Nokie. At the same time the vet can rule out other causes of weakness.

It sounds like Tia is in pain, which what caused her to be subdued and walk slowly. In a senior lab, there are a couple reasons why this is happening to her. She could have arthritis, she could be suffering from hip dysplasia, or she could be suffering from problems with her joints. I recommend taking Tia into the vet first thing in the morning for an exam. The vet can do a lameness exam and x-rays to diagnose what is causing her pain, and can treat her for it. Please do not give her any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given.

Poor Chloe! It sounds like she may be painful somewhere. I often see dogs with back or neck pain that act this way, because doing stairs or jumping is painful for them. It's also possible that she may have injured herself somehow, or has some type of orthopedic problem that makes these activities uncomfortable. I would recommend taking her to the vet for an exam. He/she may be able to determine what the problem is by palpating her neck, back, and legs, and may also recommend x-rays or other testing if needed to help diagnose the problem.
