Is it safe to bring a coccidia-treated kitten home to my cat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | unneutered | 2 lbs

I went to adopt a 7 week old kitten from a shelter and was told he is being treated for coccidia. I have a 1 year old cat at home. Is it safe to bring this kitten home? What is the chance of recovery or infection to our other cat? Will he have long term issues?

Coccidia can be treated fairly easy. I would suggest you keep your cat separated from the kitten until the kitten's stool is free of coccidia. If you adopt the kitten while under treatment for coccidia, keep your cat and the kitten separate and give them their own litter box. If properly treated, your new kitten should recover fully and I do not foresee long term issues. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Have fun with you feline friends!
