Why is my dog making a strange crying sound and struggling to breathe?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Female | unspayed | 8 years and 5 months old | 4.5 lbs

I have an 8yr old Toy Pom who seems to all of a sudden struggle to breath through her nose. She is breathing through her mouth now and seems to be fine... but she made a very strange sound almost like a baby crying quite loudly! I picked her up and at first thought that she might have had a fit. She is calmer now and seems fine... but im still concerned.

Hi, thanks for using Petcoach! Sounds like a scary moment with Abby! I am wondering if Abby had an episode of reverse sneezing. It is a very loud sucking in sound through the nose and their face has a pained grimaced look. It can be quite scary. Causes for revere sneezing are allergies, foreign body in the nose, an infection, or just a tickle one time thing. Some breeds have the episodes more often, I see it in a lot of Beagles. See if this video is similar to what she did. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U3L4v0W2_Sw Hope this helps!
