Why is my dog's fur turning red/copper from licking and itching?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Poodle | Male | neutered | 4 years and 3 months old | 52 lbs

Both of my dogs poodles fur is like a cooper color under the belly and inside of the legs. My black dog is cooper and my apricot has become redder. Is this from the urine being strong? They are very itchy and licking a lot. Otherwise they are fine. Should I consult the vet. They are scheduled to be groomed this week?

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Actually dog saliva has a pigment in it that can cause the hair to turn a brownish red color. My guess is that the reason their fur is changing color is from them licking not from the urine. I recommend seeing your Vet to figure out why they are scratching and licking first. It could be from fleas, allergies from environment or food), or an infection. Then after you see the Vet go get them groomed! I hope this helps!
