Is it normal for my 8-week puppy to not listen or cry in crate?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | unneutered | 1 month and 30 days old

Hello, i got my puppy Labrador 5 days ago at 8 weeks old. Is it normal for him to still not listen to me and not know his name when called yet ? How old until he starts to listen more etc ? Also how long is it until they stop crying in their crate at night / left alone for a couple of hours? Thank you and kind regards , Dave

All of this behavior you are describing is completely normal for a young puppy. Jack has a lot of new surroundings to get used to and that will take time. He should start to learn his name in about 2-3 weeks. It will probably take about that long for him to get used to being in the crate at night as well. Remember, he has been used to being with his mom and litter mates up until this point so he is not accustomed to being alone. Even though he is still very young, now is a great time to start some basic training commands with him. This will help better cement your relationship and help him understand that you are the one in charge. Use lots of treats to reward him when he does what you ask. To help him learn his name more quickly, give him a treat every time he looks your way when you say his name and try to avoid yelling his name when he is being scolded (for example instead of saying 'Jack, no!', just say 'No!'). I hope this helps. Congratulations on your new puppy!
