My dog got too many rabies shots. Will he be okay? What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | neutered | 7 years and 7 months old | 7 lbs

I took my 7 year old miniature yorkie to get a rabies vaccination earlier this year. Last month my parents took both my dog and their dog to get neutered and that establishment gave him another rabies shot. And today I took him to the same establishment ONLY to get his booster shots and they gave him yet ANOTHER rabies shot! What should I do and will he be alright?

He will be fine in the long term but it is possible for him to have a reaction the vaccine such as swelling or redness or vomiting or diarrhea. The best thing to do is check the records and make sure they are under the correct owner and animal name at the vet because sometimes they can have 2 files of the same animal under different owners ( yours and your parents) and not realize they are the same. From there ask them to adjust the reminds so you only have him being due in 1-3 years from now based on your areas laws

Wow! Sorry to hear this happened to you. You should call animal control in your area ASAP! Give them the dog owner's information. They will track them down and try to sort out this mess. That is their job. Rabies is a huge deal and if you need to get prophylactic injections you need to get started right away! Don't wait on this! Rabies is a fatal disease! I hope this helps. Best wishes for everything to turn out OK!
