Is it safe to give my dog with pancreatitis Robitussin for a cough?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Female | spayed | 10 years and 7 months old | 16 lbs

My 9 year old dachshund has chronic pancreatitis. It is managed well and she is asymptomatic now, but there is a respiratory 'bug' going around with my other dogs that she has caught (simple cough, afebrile). They have managed it well and recovered within 48 hours with just Robitussin and rest. I kept her away, but she has caught the bug. Is it safe to give her Robitussin with pancreatitis, or will it cause a flair up?

Potential side effects of Robitussin include vomiting and diarrhea, but I cannot find any contraindication for using it in a dog with historical pancreatitis. If it takes her longer to clear the bug than it did for the other dogs, though, she may need a vet checkup!
