I have one dog that is being treated for blastomycosis. Can this be spread to my other dogs and if so how can I prevent the spread?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am sorry to hear about your dog! Infection with Blastomyces occurs when a cat or dog inhales the fungal spores into the lungs. The incubation period is from 5 to 12 weeks. Some animals don't show clinical signs for a long time after being infected, but those animals are not contagious to other animals and people. I hope this helps and I wish you the best of luck!

If your dog has a blastomycosis infection, he can't directly infect other members of the family – humans or pets. However, care should be taken when handling any secretions. For example, in draining lesions, you should use protective gloves and wash your hands thoroughly after you've had contact with the infected sores.
