Why does my dog's one eye get puffy and leaky every few months?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 2 years and 7 months old | 120 lbs

The flesh around my dogs right eye is puffy and his eye is very leaky. This happens about once every 3 months and lasts about 5 days then the swelling goes down. It only happens to the one eye. He doesn't seem to be too bothered by it but does occasionally paw at it. Any idea whats causing this? The swelling went down a lot today and i was able to get a good look at the eye itself and it does not seem irritated at all. No scratches from the eyelashes or anything wrong with the eye.

Great question and great observation! I would recommend taking Charley to the vet where they can stain the eye to look for scratches. This is very hard to see without a stain. They can also look under his third eyelid for any foreign bodies that could be stuck there. Lastly, they will need to look with a magnifying glass to see if there are fine, difficult to see hairs that are causing irritation to the eye. It isn't normal for the eye to flare up every few months. If all that is normal you and his vet can discuss possible allergic causes. Good luck and kisses to Charley!
