Why does my dog have frequent erections and slow penis retraction?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 9 years and 2 months old | 17 lbs

My dog has started to suffer from unexplained large erections which generally last for about ten minutes or so. He stands still and tends to thrust. A small amount of clear liquid is expelled. The base of his penis becomes very hard. After calming him the erection subsides but his penis takes a long while to retract into the sheath. After these episodes he quickly returns to his normal playful self. What can I do to help him.

It could be due to a prostate disease, you should take him to the vet in order to have his prostate checked, if it is enlarged the vet should advise having him neutered ASAP. there is a good chance that it could solve the problem.
