My puppy holds breath in sleep with eyes open. Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Goldendoodle | Male | unneutered | 3 months and 14 days old | 35 lbs

I looked over and it looked like my puppy stopped breathing in his sleep and his eyes were open. When I called him, he responded right away. But, I'm not sure if maybe I saw it wrong, or if it actually happened. He has had some runny stool for the last 24 hours or so (normal stool within this time as well), I don't know if those two things correlate or if I was just worried and seeing things. He is acting normally, playing, sleeping, eating, drinking, etc.

Congrats on your new puppy! Love the name! It isn't abnormal for a puppy to hold their breath while sleeping- sometimes they can just take long deep breaths. As long as he's eating, drinking, playing and not having vomiting or diarrhea, he should be good. If he still has runny stools by tomorrow, I recommend seeing a vet to check for intestinal parasites. Good luck and kisses to Dune!
