My dog has bad teeth. Can I feed him ground kibble with water?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bichon Frise | Male | unneutered | 13 lbs

I feed my dog ground up kibble mixed with water since he has bad dental issues. (It's ground up to the point where it's not a powder, but more like very very small bits of food. See picture) Is this okay, or should I be feeding him a different way? (He eats his food when I feed it to him like this, but I just want to make sure.)

If Rocky is comfortable eating his food in this manner, this is absolutely fine. Another less labor intensive option would be to simply soak whole kibbles in warm water for 10 minutes prior to feeding him, then mixing the mushy kibble together. If Rocky begins to show signs of oral pain (picking up food then dropping it, pawing at the mouth, drooling), he may need to have his food softened further and need additional evaluation. If you haven't already had his dental issues addressed with his vet, that's another good place to start. I hope that all goes well!
