My dog's coat is spotty and rough. Why isn't it improving?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 6 years and 7 months old | 50 lbs

My dog's coat is growing in spotty. Certain areas are very rough to the touch. I feed him Merrick dry food and add salmon oil but it hasn't gotten better over the last 6 months. What could it be?

Patchy hair coat can be due to a number of factors, including endocrine disease (such as hypothyroidism), allergies, bacterial or fungal or parasitic infection of the skin. I would recommend an exam at your vet so they can see the hair coat and skin. They may recommend testing such as bloodwork to screen for thyroid disease, or skin cytology to check for infection.
