My dog has welts after being outside. Why is it getting worse?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | Male | neutered | 1 year and 6 months old | 70 lbs

I put my boxer outside last night for about ten min. when he came in he had welts all over his body, so I gave him a Benadryl, we went to sleep and when I got up at 5 this morning it was a lot worse and all over his entire body. What could it be?

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. This does sound like an allergic reaction. Benadry sometimes works pretty well, but not always. It can sometimes take 24-48, or even 72 hours for all the welts to disappear. Continue the Benadry every 8 hours for the next 24 hours. If Tyson develops any breathing problems, stops eating, or develops any vomiting or diarrhea, please have him seen by your veterinarian ASAP.
