I adopted a 7 year old JRT from a shelter 3 weeks ago. I had her for two days and she came down with canine influenza. Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. First, thank you for adopting Maggie. It is always heartwarming when someone takes an adult dog into their homes. I did this several months ago with a pair of bonded adult mix breeds. I am so glad that Maggie is doing well after her illness. The influenza virus has been tough on some dogs. I would be very catious with Maggie around the cat. Depending on how aggressive she is to cats she could very much injure or kill the cat. As far are house training and playing that takes time. With an older dog it can take months before they are fully comfortable in a new home. At that point she may become more playful or her personality may just not be a playful dog. But be very cautious with Maggie around the cat and keep separated if not being watched. You may find some training help from Dr Yin's behavior website. https://drsophiayin.com/resources/dog_behavior/#predatory aggression
