What are these black specs on my Havanese after a thrips infestation?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Havanese | Male | neutered | 12 lbs

I have small black specs coming from my hair, and now my Havanese also has them, with small embedded blk spots. It all started with a large thrips infestation in the house, I have used prescription lice shampoo and probably 200 of these tiny black specs were on my pillow next morning. Please help me

Thrips are not infectious to animals but can be transported by them. You can try bathing Pepi with a very dilute apple cider vinegar, being careful to avoid the eyes. If this is not thrips, you will need to take Pepi to your veterinarian to obtain a diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

I would recommend using a high quality flea treatment, although these are definitely not fleas, very high chances that it will kill those little insects and prevent re infestation. here is the list of the best flea products on the market. Spot ons: Revoulution Advantage Advantage Multi Frontline (ticks as well) Tablets: Trifexis/comfortis Bravecto (ticks as well) - for dogs Collar: Seresto ( (ticks as well) House spary: Indoorex
