Is the wildfire smoke alert dangerous for my dog's health and safety?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | spayed | 90 lbs

I have a Labrador (Labradork) and she will be 13 in October. She's in good health aside from right hip arthritis. We live in WA State and are currently experiencing a health alert from heavy smokey air from fires burning in Canada. My question is will our health alert for humans also be a health alert for dogs?

Hi and good question! The short answer to this is... yes! Smoke inhalation can also cause health problems for our pets as well. Like humans, dogs can experience compromised lung function due to exposure to smoke. Dogs that have underlying health issues such as COPD, heart disease, lung disease, or who are of the Brachycephalic breeds are more at risk. Please keep Holly away from the smoke!
