My dog has tapeworms. Can she still get her yearly vaccines?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 1 year and 3 months old

I noticed late last night that Luna has tapeworms. I immediately purchased Bayer Tapeworm Dewormer on Amazon and selected one day shipping. If I give her the medicine tomorrow as soon as it is delivered to clear up her tapeworms, would it effect her ability to get her vaccines on Saturday? She is scheduled for her yearly vaccines on this upcoming Saturday.

It shouldn't affect her getting updated vaccinations. Your veterinarian will confirm good health prior to vaccinating anyway with a physical exam. You should treat Luna and the environment for fleas though. Fleas are how tapeworm are spread. Use a topical preventative monthly for at least three consecutive months, preferably year round. Vacuum everywhere Luna has been and dispose of the bag outdoors or wash the canister with hot, soapy water. Wash all bedding in the hottest water allowable. Use an area treatment such as Knockout ES (by Virbac) to prevent reinfestation.
