Dog limping, licking paw, yellow spot: Is it a burn or injury?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Female | spayed | 9 years and 6 months old | 40 lbs

My dog has hurt has hurt her front right foot, and when I checked the pads (I thought it might be a splinter) the metacarpal had a yellowish spot that I don't think was there before. She's been limping, licking at it, and favoring it for a few days. The other foot doesn't have this. I think it's important to note that the concrete on the backyard gets very hot and it might be a burn. Any ideas of what it might actually be? I'm sorry to hear Gab is having issues. Limping and licking at a paw can be due to either a skin or orthopedic injury. If she had an irritation between her paw pads,'it can lead to a secondary bacterial infection on the bottom of her foot. There could also be foreign material stuck under the skin or a cyst starting to grow. If there is an orthopedic cause, she could have pulled a muscle, broken a toe or sprained her wrist. If she doesn't improve on 24 hours of rest and putting something on the foot so she can't lick at it, I would recommend she be seen by her regular veterinarian to determine the underlying cause for her issue, have any necessary testing done (X-rays) and get started on any treatment (antibiotics, antiinflammatory, anti-itch medication) that she may need to resolve her issue. Good luck!
